Philosophy of our Businesses

Compiled by Spencer Hays and his Business Associates

  • We believe in excellence and make it a habit.
  • We believe that we cannot build a business; we build people and people build the business.  We put great emphasis on creating an atmosphere in which people can take their God-given talents, skills, and capabilities and have fun achieving and accomplishing.
  • We believe that we will do what it takes to delight our customers.
  • We believe that we are in business to serve our customers, and the way to maintain customers is to always give more value than we charge for.
  • We believe that management’s first responsibility is to run the company in such a way that it makes money.  If not, how can the company stay in business and continue giving customers the good quality products they want?
  • We believe it is management’s responsibility to guarantee every worker in our business job security, and the only way we can do that is to run the company in such a way that we make money.  The only way a company can make money is to grow its sales.  If a company’s sales stay the same, since expenses are going up every year, it makes less money.  The only way a company can grow its profits is to grow its sales.
  • We believe in taking from profit each year and putting that back into the business, enabling us to give even better products and services to our customers.
  • We have a profit-sharing plan as part of our business.  We believe it is our responsibility to give each employee the opportunity to retire with dignity and self-respect.
  • All of the key people within our companies own part of the business.  They have an owner’s viewpoint and perspective.  Therefore, they will always give the very best quality and service and remember that the customer is first.
  • Waste leads to want, so we work very hard not to squander money.  This means we have more money to spend on better services and products for our customers.
  • We believe in the importance of a wholesome and good attitude.  If we think we can, we can.  We can, we will, we are going to excel and succeed.
  • There are two types of people in this world--one looks for a way, the other looks for an excuse.  It doesn’t take guts, gumption or determination to find an excuse; anybody can locate one.  It takes a quality person to find a way over, under, around, or right through any obstacle that stands in the way.
  • A lot of people are talkers.  They talk about all the things they can do, but sometimes they don’t do them.  My grandmother always said, "Don’t judge people by what they say; judge them by what they do." We should place our worth, not on what we think we can do, but on what we actually do.
  • The people who are coming up under a manager are always going to notice the way that manager expresses himself/herself.  If a manager gives credit and praise to peers and the people over him/her, then the people coming up under that manager will feel the same way.   If a manager expresses trust of peers and the people over him/her, the people coming up under that manager will feel the same way.  If a manager shows appreciation for peers and the people over him/her, the people coming up under that manager will feel the same.  The right example is so important.  Also, our customers will feel about us the way we feel about our peers and the people over us.
  • Never be critical of anyone to someone else.  If we say something to someone for the purpose of helping a person, it should be said only to the people who can actually have an influence on the person we are talking about.
  • We don’t want to be right; we want to be for what is right.
  • We are not important, but what we do is important. We have seen a few men and women do extremely well over a long period of time, and we have seen a lot of people do well for a short period of time, and then fail.   The people who do well over a long period of time always think of what they are trying to achieve as being more important than themselves.  If we make ourselves more important than the things we are trying to achieve, we become petty and selfish, and we fail.
  • Today is the day and now is the time to achieve and accomplish.  Get the order today.  Make the sale today.
  • The difficult can be done right away; the impossible takes just a little longer.
  • We believe in the importance of enthusiasm.  If we act enthusiastic, we will become enthusiastic.  Will James, a great Harvard psychologist, discovered that action goes before feeling.  We can control and regulate our feelings by controlling and regulating our actions.  If we act a certain way, we begin to feel that way.  Action goes before feeling.
  • Never be part of the problem; be part of the solution to the problem.  People like this are motivational and inspiring to others.
  • All problems can be solved within five feet of where they happen, not miles away in an office.
  • Little people get upset over little things; big people don’t.  Unfortunately, a lot of people go through their entire lives getting upset and spending a lot of time and energy on incidental things that don’t make a bit of difference.
  • Form the habit of doing things failures don’t like to do.  Failures don’t like to plan in advance.  They don’t like to call and make their appointments in advance.  They don’t like to see a certain number of new people every day.  They don’t like to confront people about actions that are not consistent with their goals.
  • We live in an age of intellectual giants and emotional midgets.  We can put a man on the moon and bring him back, but we can’t control ourselves and overcome our emotions enough to overcome the fear of failure and the fear of rejection.  Many times we are so afraid we can’t do something that we don’t even attempt it.
  • The way to overcome the fear of rejection is to make the call!  The way to overcome the fear of failure is to keep figuring out better and better ways of doing our job.  If we don’t succeed at first, keep trying and trying.
  • There is no limit to what can be accomplished, if we don’t care about who gets the credit.
  • Set high goals, give good self-talk, and be accountable.
  • What we are someday going to be, we are now becoming.
  • We are all part of a team.  It takes many people doing many different things to build a great company--no one can do it alone.
  • Real success is doing our best.
